If you believe the App is not tracking, this could be for one of two reasons:
1. Location settings are not correctly set to ‘Always’.
We find that this change is usually manually set, but the change is accidental. iOS (Apple) can send you a notification asking if you wish to let the App continue to track your locations. Often people will select ‘only when using the App’, unfortunately this will disable our background tracking.
It could also be that someone has recently started using the App and the initial request to set Location permissions to ‘Always’ was not completed.
2. Your background tracking has been disabled by iOS (Apple once more).
This can happen but it is rare. It may happen due to a lack of movement, for example your phone staying in the same place for long period.
The below actions should resolve both issues:
For a simple check to see if your App is tracking, please check your maps to see if pins have dropped recently. If pins are dropping the App is tracking.
Troubleshooting:
i. Firstly please restart the App as follows:
/ Go to the iPhone Home Screen
/ Swipe up from the bottom of the screen and pause (on Face ID models), or double-press the Home button (on Touch ID models) to open the App Switcher.
/ Locate TrackingDays or TrackingStates
/ Swipe up on the app’s preview to close it.
/ Tap the TrackingDays or TrackingStates icon on your Home Screen to reopen it.If this does not solve your issue please now check your Location permissions which need to be set to ‘Always’ for the App to be allowed to track by the iOS.
ii. Location Settings, go to:
/ iPhone settings
/ Scroll down to the bottom of the page and tap ‘Apps’
/ Scroll down and tap ‘TrackingDays’ or ‘TrackingStates’
/ Select ‘Location’
/ Please select ‘Always’ and ensure ‘Precise Location’ is toggled on.
/ Please move some distance, and check that Florida is not showing and you are dropping pins in your maps.
/ If always was not selected then this was the reason for your tracking issue.General good practice:
- Our Apps work with movement, so please keep your phone with you and try to move it +-500m per day to record locations.
- Please also check into the App from time to time and if you think for any reason it may not be tracking accurately please just restart the App as described in point 1. above. If your App has not been tracking for one of these reasons, you may now have some ‘unverified’ time to edit back to your correct travel record. Please see How do I Edit a Trip for more help with this.
-
Just as a heads up, we’re busy rebuilding this feature from scratch, this update should available soon, (by the end of 2026).
In the meantime, thanks for bearing with us with the original process.
Add Previous Days allows you to add travel time from before the date you downloaded the App.
When you add previous days, you will move your tracking start date backwards. You will then edit this newly added ‘unverified’ time. There are three ways you approach this depending on your needs:
1. I only want to add specific Trips, eg. for a single country.
2. I want to add all of my Trips for a complete travel record, adding one trip at a time.
3. I want to add all of my Trips for a complete travel record, adding all travel in one go (needs all records to hand, more complex process).
(Just a quick note: we are currently working on upgrading this process to move editing trips to a simple calendar view, please look out for this in a future update).
1. I want to add only specific dates.
Ex. You downloaded the App mid year and you have some Trip dates for one specific country, that you need to add to the App, this will complete your records for this year.
If you only wish to add specific Trips, the surrounding time still needs to be allocated somewhere. The app is designed like this to allow it to pick up any missed trips.
We therefore recommend allocating the surrounding time to ‘Transit’ or ‘Deleted’.
With this method, after editing, your Timeline would look something like this:
// Transit / Country A Trip 1 / Transit / Country A Trip 2 / Transit //
In the following example you will have added Previous Days from 1st - 31st December, you now want to add a Trip to ‘Country A’, from 12th - 15th December only:
Tap [App Settings], (white ‘cog’ in the top right hand corner).
Tap [Add Previous Days].
Select a date in the past, this will be your new tracking start date.
Tap [Generate Previous Days].
This will generate Unverified time and the App will return you to the History screen.
Tap [Verify Location].
Tap the newly added [Unverified] trip to Edit.
You are now given a list of countries.
Select ‘Country A’, also
Select ‘Transit’
Tap [Next]
In [Country], select ‘Transit’
In [To] select 12th December (for this example), select end time: 12:00
Tap [Add Next]
In [Country], select ‘Country A’
In [To] select 15th December, select end time: 12:00
Tap [Add Next]
In [Country] select ‘Transit’
In [To], select the last date highlighted in purple, select the last possible end time (Note iPhone: When adding your final Trip, flick the ‘Time’ scroller upwards and let it automatically fall back naturally.)
Tap [Summary] and check your dates added if you need to.
Tap [Verify]
This is the end of the process.
If you made an error, you can always edit individual trips later.
2. I want to add one trip at a time.
Example: You want to have a complete record of your travel and you have records of all trips and travel dates.
With this method you will add your trips back one at a time, adding the most recent trip first and working back to the earliest trip. For example:
Start edit - Add ‘Country A’ from 25th - 31st December, finish edit.Start edit - Add ‘Country B’ 20th to 25th December, finish edit.
Start edit - Add ‘Country C’ 1st to 20th December, finish edit.
The process is quick to repeat, after you have completed it once.
Tap [App Settings], (white ‘cog’ in the top right hand corner).
Tap [Add Previous Days].
Select the starting date of your most recent trip, (example ‘Country A’ above, start date would be 25th December.)
Tap [Generate Previous Days].
This will generate Unverified time from 25th December to your current start date. The App will return you to the History screen.
Tap [Verify Location].
Tap the newly added [Unverified] trip to Edit
Select ‘Country A’
Tap [Done]
This is the end of the process and your Trip for ‘Country A’ has been added.
Repeat the process to add ‘Country B’, ‘Country C’ etc adding more previous days and moving backwards in time.
3. I want to allocate all of my time, in one go.
Example: You want to have a complete record of your travel and you have records of all trips and travel dates, you will add all at once.
Select every country that you need to add, this can be as many as you need.
Once all countries are selected Tap [Done]
You must now work forwards from your earliest trip in chronological order. Adding your entry and exit dates and times, for each trip. All time needs to be allocated.
In [Country], select your earliest Trip country
In [Date Range] Tap [To]. Add the date and time that you departed this country.
Tap [Add Next]
Repeat the process adding each Trip moving forwards in chronological order.
Note iPhone: When adding your final Trip, flick the ‘Time’ scroller upwards and let it automatically fall back to the end of the added time.
Tap [Summary] and check your dates added if you need to.
Tap [Verify]
This is the end of the process.
If you made an error, you can always edit individual trips later.
Your physical movements are also displayed, in your Timeline, in your individual country pages and on your maps. These pages will show all of your country to country movements, so multiple days are displayed, but your key ‘Official Count’ figure at the top of the page and your summary totals on the History page, will only ever count 1 Day per country per 24 hrs.
A TrackingDays Night is your country location at midnight 00:00. -
You can edit any Trip in TrackingDays / TrackingStates, with the exception of the current Trip, which needs to be completed before it can be edited, or if you need to change Country / State.
EDIT A TRIP - PROCESS
Tap Timeline (Timeline is located at the top of the History page, above your list of Countries / States).
Tap ‘Edit’ (top right corner).
Tap the Trip or Unverified time that you wish to edit.
You are now given a list of Countries / States to select from.
If you are editing a Trip to a single Country / State, for example ‘Unverified’ to ‘UK’ (TKD), or ‘New York’ to ‘Florida’ (TKS) only:
Select the target Country / State from the list
Tap ‘Done’This is the end of the process.
However, if you have a longer list of countries to add and you wish to split a Trip into multiple smaller Trips:
From the list, select every target Country / State that you need. Also available are “Transit” for transit time and “Deleted” for untracked or unwanted time.
Tap [Done].
Starting at the beginning chronologically, you need to work forwards from your earliest Trip dates, adding Trips by entry and exit date & time.
In [Country] / [State], select your first Trip Country / State.
In [Date Range], tap [To]. Add the date and time that you departed this country.
Tap [Add Next].
Repeat the process, adding each Trip in chronological order.
Tip 1: All time needs to be allocated. If you only wish to add specific dates, use ‘Transit’ for the rest of the time. For example, edit as follows: Country - Transit - Country - Transit - Country, and so on.
Tip 2:
iPhone: When adding your final Trip, flick the ‘Time’ scroller upwards to let it automatically fall back at the end of the added time. This will help avoid leaving a time gap.
Android: Simply navigate to the end of the time added.Tap [Summary] and check the dates added.
Tap [Verify].
This is the end of the process.

Your location settings for the App are set to ‘Always’.
Your iCloud backup is turned on. Your data will back up to your personal iCloud; we do not track any user data.
-
You do not need to configure TrackingDays for it to track, it will automatically start tracking Days and Nights in your Country when you enter the Country. It will do the same for all countries worldwide that you visit building up your travel record over time.
Reminders: However, you can also now set reminders for specific countries, to do this:
Tap the ‘plus’ icon - located on the History page
Select the country you wish to set up
select the dates you wish to set for a reminder, for example of you are tracking a calendar year tap this setting. You can also set up any bespoke dates you need.
When you’re done, tap ‘Confirm’
Set a number of days or nights you are allowed in the country. Ex. 90 days
To toggle between days and nights, tap the ‘sun’ icon.
Now set a number of days / nights at which you’d like a reminder. Ex. 70 days.
Tap ‘Confirm’
You have now set up your first reminder, you can set up as many reminders as you need and for any country.
Reminders are not yet available for Schengen, but we hope to add these later. The App will automatically track Schengen time, you can toggle this off in App settings if you don’t need it.
Please just leave the App running in the background, do not close it, it needs to be open to work, and please check back into the App fairly regularly.

STOP! DO NOT DELETE YOUR OLD PHONE until you have successfully backed up your travel data to iCloud.
TrackingDays and TrackingStates back up all of your travel data to your personal iCloud. This is to respect your privacy; we do not hold any of your tracked travel data — zero, nada. You control your data.
To transfer TrackingDays or TrackingStates data from an old to a new iPhone, you will need to:
1. RUN A BACKUP IN THE APP
The App will run backups automatically once per day, but it’s good practice to check your backups before you migrate to your new phone. Go to:
/ App Settings
/ Backup
/ Backup NowThis will back up your data to iCloud.
2. EXPORT AND SAVE YOUR DATABASE
This is an extra precaution, but you can easily export and save your database. If you then have any migration issues, you can contact us via Support, and we can talk you through how to reinstall your database. Go to:
/ App Settings
/ Send Developer Files
/ Save to FileSave the zipped folder somewhere safe. Do not open it or try to reinstall these files without our guidance.

4. RESTART TRACKING
Once your new phone is set up, please open TrackingDays or TrackingStates right away to recommence tracking. The App will not begin tracking again until it has been opened. As always, please leave the App running in the background at all times.
5. RECONNECT YOUR SUBSCRIPTION
Assuming you have a current valid subscription, when you first open TrackingDays or TrackingStates on your new device, please navigate to:
App Settings / Subscribe
At the bottom of the page, you will see the ‘Restore Purchases’ option. Please ONLY SELECT this option if you have a valid subscription. This will reconnect your subscription to your new device.
If you have a valid subscription and try to purchase a new subscription, this can conflict with your existing valid subscription. However, if you have already tried to purchase a new subscription in error, simply close the App and restart it, then navigate to Subscribe once more and select ‘Restore Purchases’. More detailed instructions on this are below.
6. REINSTALL YOUR BACKUP
If, for any reason, your current data has not come across in the iCloud backup, you can now reinstall from your App Backup. Go to:
/ App Settings
/ Backups
/ Locate the most recent backup from the old device. This will be near the bottom of the list, so scroll down. (It will not be the newest backup.)
/ Tap the backup to install it.MY SUBSCRIPTION IS NOT WORKING
If you have a current subscription but the App is not showing your subscription as active:
/ Please close and restart the App.

A TrackingDays Day is any visit to a country or jurisdiction within a 24 hour time period no matter how short that visit is. For example, if you visit for 1 minute, 30 minutes or 23 hours the App will register your visit as 1 Day. The App will only count 1 Day per country in a 24 hour time period, this is displayed in the ‘Official Count’ total, located at the top of your Timeline and country pages, as well as in your summary totals on your History page.
The App will not double count Days in a 24 hour time period. For example, if you cross a border multiple times in 24 hours, the Official Count will only log 1 Day, for each country you have visited.
The Rolling 365 and Rolling 180 buttons can be found at the top of the History screen.
The Rolling 180 button is built for counting days for the 90-day rule in the EU Schengen zone. If you toggle this button on, all pages of your device will switch to a Rolling 180-day count. Then simply navigate to the Schengen page to check your Schengen days.
Toggle Rolling 180 off to return to normal day counting between the dates set at the top of your History Page.
The Rolling 365 button is for countries that use a rolling 12-month method as part of their assessment of tax residency. An example of this is New Zealand, which uses a 183-day rule within any rolling 12-month period to determine tax residency. If you’re present in New Zealand for more than 183 days in any 12-month period, you’re considered a tax resident.
NOTE: Toggling either of these buttons on will override your set dates at the top of the History Page. Please remember to toggle off if you no longer wish to see a Rolling day count.

In TrackingDays and TrackingStates you do not archive tracked time, you only need to decide which data you wish to display.
To display data only for a new calendar year, there are two options,
Option 1. affects all pages of the App, this option is for TrackingDays and TrackingStates.
Option 2. Is a bespoke display we call ‘Favourites’, this is currently only available in TrackingDays at this time.
Option 1. Date Settings (For TrackingDays and TrackingStates)
At the top of your History page are ‘From’ and ‘To’ date settings, these are set in a light grey container.
All pages in the App will display data that corresponds to the dates you set here.
To display data for 2026 only:
/ Set ‘From’ to: 01.01.2026
/ Set ‘To’ as ‘Today’, this will keep data displayed current and will roll forwards each day
All pages in the App will now show data between these set dates.NOTE: TrackingDays: Rolling 180 and Rolling 365 are shortcuts.
If you toggle these on (white), they will override the date pickers. These Rolling shortcuts are for specific situations and countries where a rolling day or night count is required, for example for New Zealand residency or for the EU Schengen zone 90/180 day rule.Option 2. Add a ‘Favourite’ country (currently only available in TrackingDays)
On the History page, there is a ‘+’ sign floating at the bottom of the screen.
/ Tap this ‘+’ sign
/ Tap ‘Select Country’ and choose the country you wish to track as a ‘Favourite’
/ Tap ‘Select Dates’
/ Tap ‘Calendar Year’
/ Tap ‘Confirm’
/ Next enter the number of Days/Nights you’re allowed to spend in the country, ex. 90 nights
(NOTE: You can toggle between days and nights, by tapping the sun / moon icon)
/ Set a Reminder, ex. Remind me after 80 nights
/ Tap ‘Confirm’
You will now see your ‘Favourite’ on your History page.
‘Favourites’ are independent from the other settings in the App and will not be affected by the Date Settings described below.
You can add as many ‘Favourite’ countries as you wish.
You can delete a ‘Favourite’ by swiping right. If you delete a favourite by accident, don’t worry, the data is not lost, you can just set it up again. -
You can set the App to display your days between and two dates, within your tracked date range.
eg. A calendar year or a Tax year.
You can set your Dates Displayed parameters on the History page.
At the top of the History page you will see a grey shaded area with FROM and TO options.
Set FROM and TO to the dates you need.
The rest of the App will then populate between these two dates, including your individual Country pages & Schengen time.
If you set TO as TODAY, this will roll forwards with each passing day.
ex.1. You wish to set your Dates Displayed for a calendar year.
On the HISTORY page:
- set FROM as 1st January 20XX
- set TO as 31 December 20XX
ex.2. You wish to set your Dates Displayed for the last UK Tax Year eg. 2021 - 2022 at the time of writing.
On the HISTORY page:
- set FROM as 6th April 2021
- set TO as 5th April 2022
ex.3. You wish to see how many days you have spent in a country this year and on a rolling basis.
On the HISTORY page:
- set FROM to 1st January 2022
- set TO to TODAY
PLEASE NOTE: The (Rolling 180) and (Rolling 365) buttons, will over ride the TO and FROM settings. These buttons are located at the top of the HISTORY page.
The (Rolling 180) button was created for Schengen day counting.
The (Rolling 365) button was created for situations where you need to keep track of time in a country over a rolling year, eg. New Zealand and Indonesia.

TrackingDays now includes an automatic Day count for the border free EU Schengen Area. Most non-EU citizens, including UK citizens post-Brexit, are limited in the time they can spend in the EU Schengen area. The time allowed is 90 days out of a rolling 180 day period.
The TrackingDays Schengen day count treats Schengen countries as a single area and will count ‘Days’ (visits) to Schengen in a 24 hr time period. A Schengen day is any visit to the Schengen Area, no matter how short, within a 24 hour time period. TrackingDays will not double count Schengen Days, it will only 1 ‘Day’ per 24 hours in your ‘Official Count’ and as shown in your History page summary.
Separately TrackingDays will also count individual country visits within Schengen. The ‘Last 180’ button: Once you have been tracking for greater than 180 days a new button will appear in the top left corner of your History page labelled ‘Last 180’. If you tap this button the App will display your tracked days and night for the past 180 days (including today, so 179 days + today), so you can check your current Schengen position in a matter of seconds, simply open TrackingDays and tap the ‘Last 180’ button.
